What’s your name and what genre would you consider your books to be?

Hi and thanks for having me on today! I’m Rosemary A Johns, an award-winning fantasy author. This includes urban and supernatural suspense.

Tell me about your book. How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)?

My new series is REBEL ANGELS. The first book that’s just released is VAMPIRE HUNTRESS. It’s a sort of Buffy meets Lucifer, where vampires and angels are locked in a deadly war. Half vampire/half angel but raised by humans, Violet is caught between both sides…who want her back.
I’d already created a British vampire antihero in REBEL VAMPIRES (Light) and I wanted to do the same with an antiheroine. I loved the idea of a supernatural being caught between worlds who has to battles all sides!

How did you get interested in writing this particular genre (historical novels, mysteries, sci-fi, children’s books, etc.)?

I’ve always been a total fantasy and paranormal addict! I also love antiheroes on thrilling redemptive journeys, so urban fantasy is the perfect genre.

Can you tell me about your Series?

REBEL ANGELS is the next series after REBEL VAMPIRES…but there are plenty of vampires too because this is an epic ancient war between angels and vampires!
Violet, is dragged into the supernatural world when her sister disappears. She’ll have to rely on a sexy vampire geek, while facing off the harem boy angel threatening her sister. And there’s only one way she’ll win: by letting out the monster…

In VAMPIRE PRINCESS, the second book in the series that’s out now to pre-order, Violet is thrown into Angel World’s deadly trials to save her lovers from a powerful cult on the eve of war…

VAMPIRE PRINCESS: REBEL ANGELS BOOK TWO is available on pre-order here:

It’s a seven-book series with plenty of action-packed surprises!

Was it always meant to become a series?

Yes, I’ve been planning this series for the last year. I’ve excited about the arc on this one…it’s going to be epic!

What’s a typical working day like for you? When and where do you write? Do you set a daily writing goal?

I start writing at 7:30. I’m most creative in the morning, so I write creatively until lunchtime (and then again in the evening). I tend to do most of my admin, editing, and marketing in the afternoon, unless I have an event on. I write either sitting on my bed or in my study. I do have a daily goal, but it’s different every day based on the section I need to write. Because of my playwriting background, I write more around ‘scenes’ than chapters and tend to stop when a scene is done.

Do you have a new book in the making and if so, what’s the name of your upcoming book?

I’ve just finished VAMPIRE MAGIC, which is a standalone book in the REBEL ANGELS world. It’s coming out in THE SHADOW FILES boxed set.
Mages and witches battle in an eternal supernatural war…

How important are character names to you in your books? Is there a special meaning to any of the names?

Character names are ALWAYS special to me: names and identity are a theme throughout my books. In REBEL VAMPIRES when the Blood Lifers (vampires) are reborn as Blood Lifers, they’re rechristened with a new name that they choose themselves and has special meaning to them.

In REBEL ANGELS, a certain faction (without giving spoilers!), cast away their heritage by renaming themselves: Rebel, Anarchy, Eden. The angels themselves have names, which refer to their Angelic Powers.

I like to hide ‘easter eggs’ like this throughout my books…you won’t necessarily see them on a first read, but for readers who want to look deeper, it’s there!

What do you think of book trailers? Do you have a trailer or do you intend to create one for your own book?

A great book trailer is amazing. A British director made REBEL VAMPIRES’ book trailer for me as a favour and I LOVE it! I wrote the script, and the visuals make me wish it was a film…and give me the shivers every time…

What’s the best thing about being an author?

There are two incredible things: the first draft buzz and the readers! I live my characters’ adventures and loves with them: I’m lost in their world. Then the flipside is when I see something I’ve written has made a true connection with a reader – that’s the best thing.

Have you always liked to write?

I created my first book – including barcode – when I was four! I’ve always been adamant I’d be a writer. I was first professionally published when I was fourteen (the editor didn’t know I wasn’t an adult!), and I loved both reading and writing. Writing isn’t about being published to me: it’s who I am.

What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Be passionate and only write what you’re truly passionate about.

If you didn’t like writing books, or weren’t any good at it, what would you like to do for a living?

I’d either be a teacher (my dad was one and I have a postgrad in history), or I’d be involved more with disability charities (I already do this because my son has autism).

What are you working on now?

I’m currently planning the third book in the REBEL ANGELS series, whilst editing the second book VAMPIRE PRINCESS. The first book VAMPIRE HUNTRESS is now out!

Can you give us a few tasty morsels from your work-in-progress?

Rebel smirked. ‘If you win, I’ll take you out to fight a vampire by yourself.’
I licked my lips. That was what I’d been training towards in this woodland at the bottom of the House of Rose, Wolf, and Fox.
To be a huntress…
‘And if I don’t win?’
Rebel’s gaze was suddenly serious. ‘You could keep your promise not to escape.’ Then he smiled shyly. ‘And call me Custodian…?’
‘In your dreams.’
I kneed Rebel in the balls, wriggling away from him like a snake, as he doubled over.
I jumped up, rolling my shoulders. ‘My advantage? A bitch fights dirty.’
Rebel’s eyes blazed as he straightened, his wings beating, whilst the snow fell in a furious flurry around him.
‘My advantage?’ Rebel unsheathed Eclipse; its flames coursed around its black core. ‘I fight with a sword.’

Vampires? Angels?
I hunt the bastards because they hunt me.
But it turns out, I’m their princess.
So, who’s the bastard now?
Until I’d turned twenty-one, only months and a candy-bloodied world away, I’d been a regular geek gamer, designing the supernatural because it stole me away from the truth of Hackney life: shanks, sex, and pain.
Until a rebel angel fell, my sister disappeared, and I let out the monster.

Where did your love of books come from?

My parents. They had a large collection of fantasy and science fiction books in our house, which they allowed me to read from eight onwards. I was hooked and I’d explore the adult section of the library, reading anything that grabbed my interest.

Do you have any favorite authors or favorite books?

So many! My favourite book is The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice. I was a teenager when I read it and it was the first time I realized you could write a book from the POV of a beautiful monster who knew he was a monster. But have the reader still love him and be unable to put the book down. It was what inspired my love for the antihero. When I’m compared to Anne Rice, therefore, it’s extra special!

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favourite and why?
Light and Violet are my equal favourites! They’re about showing the mistfit, loner, or geek can go on to save the world…to have family, be the hero, or be loved…in their own special way. They’re also anti-heroes with dark senses of humor and courage.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

There has to be a mixture…BUT I think by being original you ARE delivering what the reader wants! The most common thing said about my series is that they’re ‘unique’…at the same time they’re about something readers want and know: vampires, angels, witches, love, and adventure. So, what I do is put a twist on mythology. I create original paranormals and worlds but with ingredients that readers recognize and want.

If you were writing a book about your life, what would the title be?

Rebel Here, Yeah?
