MY INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR MIRANDA OH
What’s your name and what genre would you consider your books to be?
Hello, my name is Miranda Oh. I am the author of the Chin Up Tits Out series. I would consider my books to be in the comedy, romance genre, with juicy dramatic curve balls, twisted sarcasm; and dipped in wine.
Tell me about your book. How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)?
My life steered me naturally to telling stories. The more I experienced life, and how messy, and how not ‘black’ and ‘white’ life really was, I was striving to find something to relate to. So telling a version of my story, was an avenue to relate to real, raw independent people.
Chin Up Tits Out came from a saying my mom used to say to me growing up. Chest out, chin up, shoulders back, head up…etc. It was meant to be a power stand, a sign of confidence, and it was. It is something I carry with me all the time in my daily life. Remembering to always, Chin Up Tits Out, through anything. With that confidence, and with that thought; know that all will be a-ok.
Can you tell me about your Series? / Was it always meant to become a series?
The series follows a young women named Hadley, she had her life mapped out while leaving high school and getting ready for college. When she met a boy with an accent. What women doesn’t go weak in the knees around a cute man with an accent?
She falls in love with the man, who happened to be from South Africa. The series takes you through the thick and thin of a long distance relationship. It walks you through the remanence of the Apartheid in South Africa, with all the division, and hate still lurking through the streets. Lastly it drags the reader through the triumphs and struggles of immigration.
The second book transitions the reader into what should have been Hadley’s happily ever after, when the love of her life finally gets to move to Canada. Although, the universe can be a little twisted at times, and life threw a curve ball into Hadley’s plans. Which lead her and her partner to get a scary diagnosis. Followed by some twists, turns, and drama filled chapters covering mental illness, addiction, and the necessary evil of wine in the time of a crisis for a young women.
It was not meant to be a series when I started to write out book one, I quickly realized that the entire story would need 3 parts to be depicted appropriately. Two of the three books are out and launched and are available worldwide on Amazon. In the first half of 2019 book three, the final installment will be launched.
What is the hardest part of writing for you?
The hardest part of writing is to ensure that I am putting it all out there on the paper for my readers.
If I am not drained out 100% when I am complete on a writing session, I have not worked hard enough to evoke emotion through my writing. Sometimes digging that deep is hard, and sometimes life just gets in the way. I find I have to dedicate an entire day to writing out good content. Get fully into the groove, and then sleep like a baby at night.
What’s the best thing about being an author?
Connecting with my readers is my top favorite thing about being an author. I simply tell my story to connect, and when we connect, we share hope, and when there is hope, there is a will, and when there is a will, there is a way. Which in turn means to me; together we are better, we are stronger, and I strive to connect likeminded people through my story telling. Connecting us all, and making us stronger in our day to day battle with finding balance and living a happy life.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I hope to see my series on film of some sort. Hopefully a TV series, as I think Chin Up Tits Out has so much to offer. The motto, the mantra, and the life style. The longer I live this Chin Up Tits Out attitude, my books keep getting shared around the world. My message is hash-tagged, and the lifestyle is growing. My goal for the next 10 years is to keep living that motto, and let it reach as many people as possible. It is fun reminder for ourselves to strive to maintain peace and balance within first.
Have you always liked to write?
I have always loved to tell stories. Through telling stories over the years, I finally got the courage to put pen to paper, or fingers to key board; depending on the day. With a blink of an eye, the first book was completed. Every book I write, I tend to enjoy writing more and more. Once the words start to flow, it is hard to make them stop at some points.
What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?
If you are an aspiring author, or if you have a story to share; a uniquely, crazy eccentric story do not be ashamed to put your story out there. You never know how much your words can impact someone until you publish a book, and then your life changes. Words do carry power, and you hold that power when you share your story.
Does writing energize or exhaust you?
As I mentioned before, I attempt to work until exhausted; so I am confident I put everything I could on the paper. Although when I do that, I do get very excited. It is like a 50/50 split. 50% exhausted, but 50% so excited I am done, and I wrote well.
Either way, once I am done writing I can usually have a great night’s sleep.
What are you working on now?
Third and last installment of the Chin Up Tits out series is on the way. I am about 5 – 6 chapters into the 3rd I am extremely excited for this one. I think it will be the happily ever after Hadley deserves, but that no one can actually imagine.
