EXCERPT

I step out of the car onto the cobbled stone outside the church, but I can’t seem to move any further. I don’t want to go any further because this should not be happening. None of us should be here, especially Betts.
“Come on, Bea,” my dad gently encourages. “They’re getting out of the other car, and we need to go to them. Tyler, walk with your sister.”
My brother hangs back because I need a second before I follow. I make the mistake of looking up to the sky-tears immediately fill my eyes. I hadn’t noticed until now how bright the sun is shining. The cliché would be for rain to fall and dark clouds to crowd the sky. But that wouldn’t be right for Betts. She deserves the sunshine.
With a deep breath, I take my brother’s arm, and we make a slow approach. Uncle Mike is the first out of the car. He holds out his palm for Aunt Grace. Zed and Noah get out the other side. The second I see Zed, I turn away, unable to witness his pain.
“Christ, he can’t live with himself, look at his face.”
Immediately, I turn on my brother forcing him to take a step back. “Don’t you ever insinuate he didn’t do all he could. They both did.” I whisper. Reid and Zed had both been there on the day Betts died. Neither could save her. She disappeared beneath the waves before their eyes. They searched and searched… but she wasn’t found until hours later. “I have not one single doubt in my mind that this is tearing them to pieces. You never allow those words to leave your lips again.” I warn. Tyler bobs his head, now bereft at his statement.
As I finally draw my eyes back up to my cousin, I understand Tyler’s words. Pain is etched in every line, every muscle on Zed’s face. His eyes are where the sorrow is more visible though, making my cousin unrecognisable. My focus lands to those standing closest to Zed. I promised myself I wouldn’t look for him, but I have to. I scan over the many faces but come up empty.
“Where’s Reid?” I question Tyler, the confusion evident in my voice. “He needs to be here.”
“He told Zed he didn’t think it was right to go in the car with them seeing as though he’s not family.”
“What?” Again I act stunned at my brother. “Of course he’s family.”
“Well, technically he isn’t.”
“Tyler Maddison, I swear to God you need to keep that mouth closed, or I’m going to shove it on top of a headstone.” Reid is family. He may have lived across the road from my cousins but he was with them every single day, he is as much a part of their lives as I am. Other than Doug and Alice, his foster carers, we are the only family he’s ever known.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know where this shit is coming from. I guess I don’t handle funerals too well. Come on.” Tyler gestures for us to continue walking.
As we make our way towards my family, the sound of a motorbike grows closer. My whole body stills, knowing it’s him. When the engine shuts off, my body twists of its own accord and my eyes naturally gravitate in his direction. He takes the helmet from his head and lets it hang loosely at his side. With his eyes to the ground, he steps off his bike and hangs his leather jacket on the handlebars. With feet that appear as heavy as lead, he approaches our family. Briefly, his eyes link to mine, and I face an emptiness I’ve witnessed once before. The day Reid arrived in Merribay. I draw in a breath in an attempt to alleviate the pain that reverberates through my chest at the sight of the lost boy who has once again returned. Dropping his focus, he steps to Zed, and I watch as Zed wrenches Reid to him. They stand, united in each other’s sorrow. One has lost a sister, the other, the only girl he’s ever wanted to protect.
Tyler squeezes my hand before he joins the rest of the men. I watch in agony as Uncle Mike, my dad, Zed, Noah, Tyler, and finally Reid, step to the coffin ready to accept my cousin for her final journey.
My cousin who I have already failed. My cousin who asked something of me and instead of saying yes, I should have said no. My thoughts veer to the last time I saw Betts, the day I made her a promise.

I draw my knees to my chest and wrap my arms around them before watching him out at sea.
“You’re actually going to do this?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper. We both have our eyes trained on one man, the man whose heart my cousin is about to break. Reid Banner.
“Yes, I am. It’s the right thing to do,” Betts replies. “I thought, out of everybody, you would understand. He’s my friend, Bea, my best friend. He’s not the man I am in love with, you know that.”
I shake my head and let out a breath.
“You have to trust me on this, Bea. He has never wanted me to see life in any way other than perfect,” she continues. “So he’s stayed by my side, believing he’s protecting me when the one he is shielding from pain is himself. He wants to live in this sheltered existence he’s created because Reid knows just how disappointing the outside world can be.” Her voice trails off, and she remains quiet. I immediately sense her unease. “This isn’t just about him, Bea.” She lowers her eyelids and whispers. “I’m selfish; I know I am, but I want to get out and experience the world. I love him but not in the way he deserves and it’s suffocating me. He’s been my strength for as long as I can remember but I want to gain my own strength now and in turn, release him. So I’m going to ask you something… and you’re going to think I’m crazy…” I loosen the grip on my legs and return her gaze. She provides me with that heart-warming smile she owns. “I need you to promise that you’ll be there for him.”
“What?” I whisper-shout. “Me? You want me to promise?” I stare at my cousin open-mouthed.
She grins back. “Yeah, you.”
“He can barely look at me without it sparking some sarcastic comment. I am not the person you should be asking.” What is she thinking? I stand up with a start and gather my belongings. I’m leaving for home today, and this is not a conversation I need to be having. I can’t believe she is asking me. “Me?” I stare at her dumbfounded. Reid Banner has quite frankly been a total arse to me since the day we met. I get it, and I’m okay with it. He needs someone, like a bully needs a target. He needs to vent, to express his anger and because I’ve pretty much been blessed with a life that was the total opposite of his, I take it, preferring the words of spite that leave his lips to be aimed at me rather than someone like Betts. Because the words and taunts would crucify her. So I know right now my cousin is bat shit crazy. I am the last person Reid will ever need.
“Yes, you.” She repeats gently and reaches for my hand. “You’re the only person it can be.”
“Betts…” I shake my head on an exhale. “It’s one thing putting up with his comments and digs but what you’re asking me… It would be like inviting the abuse into my life, and that’s a whole new level of insanity. You know what he’s like with me. Why would you ask me?”
She lowers her chin and looks away from me. “There are things you don’t understand about Reid, reasons for the way he is… He’ll never leave me, Bea. But I need him to. He needs me to.”
“You’re crazy,” I mutter, shaking my head in disbelief. Betts is basically asking me to put myself in prime position to receive Reid’s taunts. He’s going to be hurting and want to lash out even more than he has before.
“Like I say, there are things about Reid you don’t know. I just want you to check in with him once in a while-”
“Are you planning on going somewhere?”
“No, I will be here, but it will take time for him to recognise that separating ourselves is the right thing to do. He has Zed, and they’re pretty tight, but Reid still keeps the one thing that matters from both of us. His past. He says he doesn’t remember, that he was too young, but I don’t believe him. I think he was hurt… a lot… before he came here. One day he’ll be ready to talk. I want him to have someone willing to listen.”
“And you’re insinuating that I be the one to listen?” My voice hitches up in volume.
“I think you’re just the person that needs to hear it.” I widen my eyes incredulously. My cousin has totally lost it.
“Bea!” She nods her head. I follow her signal. Reid is approaching us-his expression softens the moment his eyes land on Betts. She is the only girl Reid has ever allowed to come close to entering his heart. Her palms have wrapped around it, cushioning it, preventing it from any further pain. With a sinking feeling, I realise once Betts releases the protective hold she has on him, his heart is liable to break all over again.
“For me, Bea. Promise me.” She whispers her plea.
I’m quiet for what seems like forever which confuses me because I knew my answer the second she asked. “I promise.”

Regret seeps its way through me.
Accepting mum’s outstretched arm, I drop my chin to my chest and take my heartache with everyone else’s into the church. Tears once again begin to fall.
I cry for the beautiful blue eyed girl we have all lost.
I cry for the guilt that lies so heavily in my heart, knowing I will never see Betts again to offer her my apology.

Synopsis: Some vampires have trouble figuring out how they want to spend eternity, but playboy Michael Odell isn’t one of them. He knows exactly what he wants: fine wines and beautiful women fuel his passion and he’s made it his mission to sample as many of either as he can. Fate has other ideas. One night, on his way home, Michael discovers a woman lying face-down in an alley, who is losing the fight to live. There’s only one way of saving her: The Ritual. Little does Michael know that this little act of mercy is going to change his life forever and before long he finds himself falling for the curvy stranger.

Anna doesn’t remember how she ended up discarded at death’s door in a dark alley, only that she woke up there. She doesn’t even know her last name. After coming face-to-face with her gorgeous rescuer, she passes out again and finds herself in a lavish mansion with a new lease on eternal life.

Who – or more importantly, what – is she now? And the people who tried to kill her – why were they after her? Anna is determined to figure it all out for herself. But before her questions are answered, she has to learn that even in this new immortal existence, it’s good to have friends – and perhaps a lover – by your side.

EXCERPT

Michael buttoned up his woolen overcoat as he stepped outside. It was a starless night; the dense cloud cover had made sure of that. There was a certain electricity in the air, which to him suggested it might be about to start snowing.

Michael took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Yes, something was definitely coming. Could that be what had made him feel off for most of the night?

The frosty air surrounding the bar he’d just left seemed heavy with a great many aromas. Things that humans might never notice; for example, the scent of what remained of the fallen autumn leaves from that one tree down the street.

Michael turned to face the opposite direction. Chinatown was at least a mile away, but he could smell the restaurants from here.

He was tempted to stretch his legs a little and sprint home as fast as only a vampire could, but the roads were still too busy. He couldn’t risk someone watching him as he seemingly disappeared into thin air. The Council didn’t take kindly to vampires exposing themselves to humans at the best of times. Ever since the big showdown between Michael’s friend and mentor Alexander and Council leader Julius, they’d been under extra scrutiny. Julius would jump at the chance to punish Michael for supporting Alexander.

Things had really changed a lot in a short period of time, and not entirely for the better.

Michael opened his eyes again, resigned to the fact that he would either have to hail a cab or walk home at an excruciatingly slow, much more human-like pace.

He started to walk roughly in the direction of Hyde Park. If he found a quiet spot, he might still indulge himself in a little fun. As he crossed the busy street ahead, his nose caught a whiff of something unexpected, something metallic.

Blood.

His instincts took over. He turned on his heel and sped up a little as he followed the smell. A low whimper urged him to speed up even further, but he couldn’t risk going any faster if he didn’t want to make a spectacle of himself.

There was a dark passageway in between two large office buildings. He made his way through and found himself in a quiet courtyard, which housed a number of large garbage bins. A woman’s foot peeked out from in between them. No human would have been able to see it in the dark, but Michael could.

Her breaths were labored and becoming shallower, and her heartbeat was slowing. Michael pushed one of the bins aside and kneeled beside the woman, who lay face-down on the ground.

It was obvious to him now; she was barely clinging on to life. He carefully turned her onto her back. Her lips had a purple tinge and her skin looked dry and unusually pale for a human.

The two dark marks on her neck spoke volumes.

She’d been drained.

For but a split second, her eyelids fluttered open. She seemed to see him and opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came. Then she slipped back into unconsciousness.

Michael tensed up. He ought to leave, pretend he never found her. The last thing he needed was for someone to find him here, standing over a dying woman who had clearly been attacked by one of his own. But he couldn’t bring himself to leave.

How pretty she was, how fragile, as she clung to her last shred of humanity.

Why had she ended up like this? Killing was against the rules. And discarding a drained body out in public where it could so easily be discovered? That was sacrilege.

His mind raced. Too many questions, not enough answers.

Michael gazed down at her face; the slightly parted lips, despite their unnatural color, still looked full and luxurious. As did the rest of her, actually. She made a beautiful corpse. Such a waste. This woman would have been a sight to behold before someone had decided to take her life for themselves.

He ran the back of his index finger along the side of her face. She twitched slightly, seemingly in reaction to his touch, causing him to pull away again.

No, he would not leave her, discarded among these bins of office refuse. This wasn’t the end she deserved.

Michael closed his eyes and tried to focus. Her heartbeat had become irregular, as though her body was giving up the fight. If he didn’t hurry, there wouldn’t be any life left to save.

Before he fully realized what he was doing, Michael nicked a vein in his wrist and pressed the newly created wound against her lips.

“Drink,” he whispered.

She was too far out of it, so he couldn’t compel her to listen, but that wouldn’t stop him.

Then, he picked up one of her arms and brought it to his own lips. He waited for what felt like forever. Was she too far gone already?

“Drink or you’ll die!” he urged again, fully aware she likely couldn’t even hear him.

Still, as more and more of his blood trickled out of the gash in his wrist, there was a subtle change in her. Her heartbeat seemed to strengthen. Her breaths became more controlled.

And then, out of nowhere, her free hand jerked up to grab his wrist and press it tightly against her mouth. Finally, she drank in deep gulps as her body tried to recover what it had lost.

That was his cue.

He bit into the wrist he’d been holding already and allowed himself the smallest of tastes. That completed the cycle. The Ritual was done.

She became still again and let go of his arm, her hand flopping down onto her stomach. Her eyes had remained shut throughout; she probably hadn’t even realized what had just happened.

He’d barely realized it too; he’d been acting purely on instinct. Now, as he stood up and inspected the smeared blood on his wrist, it hit him. He’d performed the Ritual. He’d created another vampire—tried to, anyway.

That was something he’d vowed he’d never take as lightly as his own maker had.

She wasn’t out of the woods yet; in fact, he wouldn’t know if she’d even survive the change until the following night, but for some strange reason, he’d jumped in and impulsively made the biggest decision of his immortal life so far.

Things would never be the same again.

AUTHOR BIOS:
Heather C. Myers – Full disclosure: I am an acquired taste. I’m a typical blonde Orange County suburbanite who says ‘like’ more than necessary, laughs loud and probably obnoxiously, and loves to dance in the rain. I’m a 26 year old college graduate with more than a few tricks up my sleeve, and I also happen to be a pretty big Ducks fan. Oh, and I’m a writer. Like, for real.
Kait Nolan – Kait Nolan is stuck in an office all day, sometimes juggling all three of her jobs at once with the skill of a trained bear—sometimes with a similar temperament. After hours, she uses her powers for good, creating escapist fiction. This Mississippi native has something for everyone, from short and sweet to Southern contemporary romance to action-packed paranormal—all featuring heroes you’d want to sweep you off your feet and rescue you from work-day drudgery. When not working or writing, Kait’s hanging out in her kitchen cooking and wishing life were a Broadway musical.
Cherie Marks – For Cherie Marks, it all started with an old-fashioned typewriter. When the family brought it home, all those stories and characters rolling around in her head could finally get out. The press and click of the keys satisfied in their own right, but when she pulled out a finished page, she knew this was for her. Since then, she’s graduated to a laptop, but the stories still find a way out.

She’s a breast cancer survivor, a teacher, a wife, a mother, and from the very beginning—a storyteller. Always a hint humorous and honest to a fault, she loves to make people laugh and smile. Her goal in life is to achieve tact and stop procrastinating. The battle wages on.
Joanne Dannon – Joanne Dannon has been living in the world of romance for as long as she can remember. From doodling love hearts on her school notebooks to regularly reading romances, Joanne’s world has always been filled with the excitement of love stories. So it was just a natural for Joanne to begin writing the genre she’s always loved.

Formerly a policy writer by day and romance writer by night, Joanne now spends full time writing the books she adores. Creating heroes for readers to fall in love with and heroines to cheer on, her characters are people readers can identify with.

Joanne writes to give her readers the experience she still loves to savor—indulging in a sigh-worthy-happily-ever-after, being swept away from the everyday by diving into a delicious romance novel.

Joanne Dannon, an Australian, is a happily married mother of two heroes-in-training who loves spending time with friends and family. She can be found on Facebook and her website www.joannedannon.comchatting about reading, writing, cooking, vintage-inspired dresses and all things romantic.
Melinda Hammond – Mel’s an authorpreneur, English teacher and podcaster who dreams of a life on the road full of adventures and handsome heroes, whilst making squizillions of dollars in book sales to pay for her chocolate fix. In the real world she writes novels for adults and kids, and offers her expert via online courses and writing retreats.
Tracey Pederson – Tracey Pedersen is an Australian author who’s finally accepted that she is meant to write, write, write! Romance writing has captured her imagination and she loves to write about crazy circumstances that just could happen in real life, with an extra twist thrown in.

Tracey is a risk taker who loves change – in 2012 she threw caution to the wind and took her family on a twelve month trip around the world. In 2014 she again took the family to live in Malaysia for a year of exploring South East Asia and eating yummy street food! In her spare time you can find her crocheting yet another blanket or posting outrageous things on Facebook!
Jolene Cazzola – An accidental author… maybe? For most of her life, Jolene never, ever, thought of herself as a writer – although she was always involved in the creative arts. Then, at the end of 2014, the idea of preserving experiences started to grow and flourish in her mind. Without any real thought about publishing, she began writing, just getting feelings and ideas down on paper. Much to her own delight, Love’s Illusions was the result. And to make things even better, Love’s Illusions, won the 2016 Maggie Award for Writing Excellence — Novel with Strong Romantic Elements — an honor she is still having a difficult time believing!

Finding she truly enjoyed the ‘writing journey’, her second book, Love’s Journey, was released in March 2016 and the third book in the series is underway.

Jolene currently lives in Jacksonville, Florida. When she’s not writing, she’s busy with pet rescue, making jewelry and stained glass and wishing her fantasies would come true.
