What’s your name and what genre would you consider your books to be?

Kelly Mooney-New Adult

Tell me about your book. How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)? Which one?

My latest release, The Dirty Rooster, like all my books, the story usually starts out by me hearing a song on the radio that gets my mojo going.

How did you get interested in writing this particular genre (historical novels, mysteries, sci-fi, children’s books, etc.)?

I started writing YA, but felt like I was being held back from getting too crazy, so I made my characters in their young 20’s.

What kind of research did you do for this book?

Just a little. Highways, towns, etc…

Can you tell me about your Series?

This was meant to be a standalone, however will write book two to come out this fall. However, it will not be about the characters in book one. Eli, a secondary character will get his story.

Do you have a favorite book out of this series?

Out of the series I have written, I think Caroline is my favorite.

Where did you get the inspiration/idea for your series?

Stories honestly just start with the first sentence and then it unfolds as I write.

What kind of research did you do for this book?

Again, it’s minor. These are fictional, so I can play with names of towns, streets etc…

Was it always meant to become a series?

 No.

What’s a typical working day like for you? When and where do you write? Do you set a daily writing goal?

I only write when the mood strikes. I can’t force it.

Do you have a new book in the making and if so, what’s the name of your upcoming book?

Yes, but it does not have a title yet. It will be book 2 of The Dirty Rooster.

How important are character names to you in your books? Is there a special meaning to any of the names?

Very. I like to keep them simple, but unique.

Where do your ideas come from?

I usually research popular baby names, etc..

Is there a genre that you’ve been wanting to experiment with?

Yes!!!!! I would love to write an MC book. (motorcycle club) But, it’s so saturated of a market in that genre and so well written, it has me pulling back and just enjoying other writer’s work.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

Finding the time.

What do you think of book trailers? Do you have a trailer or do you intend to create one for your own book?

Love them. I would do one, but not sure if I will.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

Honestly, all my books are my greatest accomplishment besides my awesome children.

What’s the best thing about being an author?

The feeling that I actually wrote 15 books and people enjoyed them. I love fan mail.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

 Not sure.

Have you always liked to write?

No. I always wanted to write soap operas when I was young. It wasn’t until my late 30’s that I picked up a pen and wrote 90k words on paper.

What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Just try. You may surprise yourself.

If you didn’t like writing books, or weren’t any good at it, what would you like to do for a living?

 A mom.

Do you read reviews of your book(s)? Do you respond to them, good or bad? How do you deal with the bad?

I read them all. I never respond unless they ask me to.

What is your least favourite part of the writing / publishing process?

 Editing!!!

What are you working on now? Can you give us a few tasty morsels from your work-in-progress?

Eli-poor country boy goes back to his hometown to help his siblings. Dad’s in jail, deadbeat mom. His baby sister’s friend always had a crush on him, but he never went there. Now they are older—he does!

Where did your love of books come from?

Eek! From reading the Twilight series.

Do you have any favorite authors or favorite books?

I adore Kristen Ashley.

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favourite and why?

Tucker! He was in Caroline. I think I loved him the most because he came from nothing, military guy. He gave up the one person he loved thinking he wasn’t good enough, but earned her love years later once he realized he was great!!

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Lately, the only problem is my eyes. The computer has sadly given me severe dry eyes and it hurts to stare too long.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

 Don’t have one.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I would kill to be original and do try, but let’s be honest, everything’s been done before.

What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

I have a select few. One in particular, Kristen Luciani who helps me plot and helps with my blurbs.

Who knew?
