MY INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR BRENDA K. DAVIES & ERICA STEVENS ❤️

What’s your name and what genre would you consider your books to be?

My name is Heather but I write under the pen names, Brenda K. Davies & Erica Stevens. I think my books are a mix of everything from paranormal romance to horror, science fiction, fantasy, and historical romance.

Tell me about your book. How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)?

Many of the ideas for my books have come from dreams and nightmares.

How did you get interested in writing this particular genre (historical novels, mysteries, sci-fi, children’s books, etc.)?

I’ve always enjoyed writing and I tend to write whatever excites me at that time.

What’s a typical working day like for you? When and where do you write? Do you set a daily writing goal?

I like to write out in the barn when it’s nice out so I can hang out with my horse, dog, and cat. I start writing as soon as everything else is done in the morning, like cleaning the stall, breakfast, and such. I like to start by 9. I don’t set a daily goal, but I usually write about 5,000 words a day when I’m in the initial writing phase.

Do you have a new book in the making and if so, what’s the name of your upcoming book?

I’m currently working on Ravaged (Vampire Awakenings, Book 7)

Ravaged (Vampire Awakenings, 7) is now available for pre-order in paperback too!

How important are character names to you in your books? Is there a special meaning to any of the names?

I think the name has to fit the character in some way. I’ve changed some names numerous times before settling on one that fits.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

The marketing. I wasn’t expecting that when I first self-published, I’m not very good at it, and my brain is definitely not business oriented. Thankfully, my husband and my awesome PA, Jamie, help me a LOT!

What do you think of book trailers? Do you have a trailer or do you intend to create one for your own book?

I think they’re a lot of fun! I have a couple of trailers for different books.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

Being happy. I try every day, no matter what is going on, no matter how down I feel, to take a moment to enjoy something in that day. I’m a big animal lover, so a lot of times, just sitting and watching the birds and my animals makes me smile.

What’s the best thing about being an author?

I get to do what I love and what I’ve always dreamed of doing every day.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully still doing this!

Have you always liked to write?

Yes. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to write and create stories.

What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Don’t give up, don’t be too hard on yourself, enjoy creating, and write what you love and would love to read.

If you didn’t like writing books, or weren’t any good at it, what would you like to do for a living?

I would be a zoo keeper/veterinarian/or run an animal rescue place if I could.

Do you read reviews of your book(s)? Do you respond to them, good or bad? How do you deal with the bad?

I stopped reading reviews but when I did read them, I never responded to them.

What is your least favourite part of the writing / publishing process?

Marketing.

Can you give us a few tasty morsels from your work-in-progress?

From Ravaged:

The man’s howl of pain pierced through her indecision. She helped those in need; she didn’t run from them. She went to grab his wrist when something snapped, and a hand seized her. Her eyes flew to the man kneeling before her; cold terror crept down her spine as she realized he’d broken the handcuffs. His leaf-colored eyes flickered with red.
“What are you?” she breathed as something else hit the stretcher, shoving him toward her.

Why did you choose to write in your genre? If you write in more than one, how do you balance them?

I rotate through my series, pondering the ones that will be upcoming while working on the current one. I love the creating of new worlds and letting my imagination run free.

Where did your love of books come from?

My mom is a huge reader and she passed it on to me.

Do you have any favorite authors or favorite books?

Dean Koontz, JK Rowling, Stephen King, James Rollins.

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favourite and why?

The characters on the book I’m currently working on are always my favorite at that time and then it rotates out. Kobal and River have a special place in my heart along with Braith and Aria, mostly because I spent a lot of time with them in their books.

Where can readers go to discover more about you and your books?

They can go to both my websites:
Erica Stevens: https://www.ericastevensauthor.com/
Brenda K. Davies: http://www.brendakdavies.com/

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Energize.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I try to write the stories I would love to read.

If you were writing a book about your life, what would the title be?

Probably Not Paying Attention.

Where can your fans find you and follow??

  1. She, both pen names, writes wonderful stories! My favorite series is The Survival Chronicles. I urge people to grab her books. You will fall in love with them. She has the ability to make the characters feel like family. And not all authors can do that. Great interview!!
