Hi, I’m Ben Jackson, and I write and publish books with my wife, Sam Lawrence. The genre that we are focusing on most now is children’s books.

Tell me about your book. How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)?

Hockey Wars is our latest book; it just released a few weeks ago. This story is my wife’s idea, and it’s strongly based around her love of playing hockey growing up in Canada.

How did you get interested in writing this particular genre (historical novels, mysteries, sci-fi, children’s books, etc.)?

It started out as a bit of a joke between us but turned out to be a great move!

What kind of research did you do for this book?

My wife Sam wrote a lot of this book based on her many years of playing competitive hockey. She gets very caught up in the details to ensure that any child who reads the book won’t be able to pick up anything odd, even down to the illustrations!

Was it always meant to become a series?

This is book one in the series, and we’re both working right now to plot out and plan book number two!

What’s a typical working day like for you? When and where do you write? Do you set a daily writing goal?

Well, I work a full-time job as a WHS officer for a large international company. When I get home, I spend a few hours writing as a freelance writer and then another hour on social media. When I don’t have freelancing jobs, I work on our books. My wife Sam runs her own company, Indie Publishing Group where she helps indie authors with formatting and publishing their books.

Do you have a new book in the making and if so, what’s the name of your upcoming book?

We’re writing the second book in the Hockey Wars series right now, but no title yet!

How important are character names to you in your books? Is there a special meaning to any of the names?

We asked all our close friends to send us their kid’s names so that we could put them in the book. We drew them out of a hat! I also like to name characters in the My Little Fart series after friends, family, and work colleagues.

Where do your ideas come from?

Personal experiences and life.

Is there a genre that you’ve been wanting to experiment with?

Children’s chapter books are the genre that we’re trying to branch into. Most of our other books are illustrated children’s books.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

Having people edit and critique my work!

What do you think of book trailers? Do you have a trailer, or do you intend to create one for your own book?

We have never done any book trailers, but it’s something that we both have thought about in the past.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

Our book ‘The Day My Fart Followed Me To Hockey’ is our best-selling book and one that we are both proud of.

What’s the best thing about being an author?

Creating stories for other families to enjoy.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Sitting on a tropical beach and drinking while we both write books full-time!

Have you always liked to write?

Yes, me more than Sam. I also love reading.

What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Just stick with it and don’t be afraid to invest a little into your own success.

If you didn’t like writing books or weren’t any good at it, what would you like to do for a living?

I enjoy being a WHS officer. It’s nice to look after people when they’re hurt and to help prevent them from getting hurt in the first place.

Do you read reviews of your book(s)? Do you respond to them, good or bad? How do you deal with the bad?

I read them. I ignore bad reviews unless they found something wrong with the formatting/printing etc. People are entitled to their own opinions, even if they don’t always make any sense.

Why did you choose to write in your genre? If you write in more than one, how do you balance them?

I love coming up with silly kids’ books that still have a message.

Do you have any favorite authors or favorite books?

I love authors like James A Michener, Bernard Cornwell, and Leon Uris.

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favourite and why?

Timmy and the Little Fart!

What is your writing Kryptonite?

Netflix. PS4. TV. Oh, and my phone. Basically, anything that could possibly distract me.

What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

Carole P. Roman is another children’s book author that has constantly helped me through writing and publishing books as an Indie Author.

If you were writing a book about your life, what would the title be?

Life is hard. Work harder.
